Treating Sagging Skin with an IPL Photofacial

Skin droopiness is one of the three elements of facial aging (the other two being fat loss and changes in skin texture). These elements of facial aging combine to make us look older, more mature, and more tired. This month we are discussing skin droopiness or sagging specifically, its causes, and how to combat it.

One solution for skin sagginess in the face is an IPL (intense pulsed light) photofacial.

An IPL photofacial is done with our Sciton Joule laser system in our office. The procedure is also known as photo-rejuvenation. The system uses a broad-spectrum light directed at the skin of the face in order to stimulate the regeneration of the skin and the growth of collagen. The treatment consists of the stimulation through heat of the dermis, or the lower layers of the skin, while leaving the outer layers cool and unaffected.

The stimulation of collagen growth due to an IPL photofacial is especially important when treating droopiness or sagginess of the skin. Collagen is an essential protein that provides the skin with firmness, plumpness, and flexibility. Collagen levels naturally decrease as we age, which is a major contributing factor in skin beginning to sag.

Other Benefits of IPL Photofacial

Along with stimulating collagen and providing a tighter look to the skin, an IPL photofacial has a number of other benefits, including: removal of brown spots or age spots, reduction of the appearance of large pores, reduction in the appearance of visible capillaries, correction of uneven skin tone, reversal of the appearance of sun damage, correction of fine lines, and the correction of the appearance of rosacea.

Downtime and Recovery

The IPL photofacial can usually be done on your lunch break, and is generally painless. Once you leave the office, you might notice some slight redness, which will fade either in a few hours or a day or two. You will begin to see results after about 24 to 48 hours.

There is no downtime or at-home recovery time with an IPL photofacial. You will need to wear sunscreen when you’re outside, but you can resume your normal activities as soon as you leave.
