Fillers & BOTOX®

for Men in Northern VA

Among the most common forms of plastic surgery for men and women alike are BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers. Designed to provide a more youthful appearance, these procedures smooth out wrinkles and add firmness to the face. When performed by the skilled specialists at NOVA Plastic Surgery, they are minimally invasive, carry few risks or side effects, and will produce quick, enduring changes in your appearance.

The Background on BOTOX® Cosmetic

The brand name BOTOX® Cosmetic comes from Clostridium botulinum, the name of a bacterium that produces botulin toxin.

When botulin toxin is injected into the skin in small amounts, it prevents the body from sending out a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which tells the muscle cells to contract. By interrupting the flow of acetylcholine, botulin toxin makes muscles less stiff, thus causing the area around them to appear smoother.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is often thought of as an aesthetic procedure, and many men do receive it for this reason. It can, however, provide a number of other benefits beyond an enhanced appearance. If you suffer from chronic muscle contractions, for example, BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most effective ways to reduce the pain you feel on a daily basis. Contractions generate pain, but by relaxing your muscles, Botox eases that pain and allows you to achieve a higher quality of life.

NOVA Plastic Surgery offers Botox for a wide range of different patients and purposes. Whether your goal is to look younger, appear less tired, or correct some specific aspect of your appearance, we have the experience and expertise to achieve it.

Fillers in Focus

Fillers offer similar aesthetic benefits to the ones you get from BOTOX® Cosmetic, but whereas Botox simply changes the way your existing face structure works, fillers add new material to that structure.

Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, which is a type of substance that the body produces naturally. Hyaluronic acid cushions the skin, moisturizes it, and helps to provide nutrients to it; it is thus essential for maintaining a firm, youthful appearance. As you age, however, the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin decreases. Regular exposure to the sun and genetic factors accelerate this process, but everyone is vulnerable to it to some degree.

Dermal fillers involve injecting hyaluronic acid directly into your face in gel form. This replaces the original layers of the acid that have deteriorated over time, adding volume to the skin while helping it to appear firm and smooth.

The Benefits & Risks of BOTOX® Cosmetic and Fillers

One of the greatest benefits of both BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers is that they are temporary procedures, firming up your face in the short term and then slowly fading over time.

This means that if you do not like the way they look when you first get them, you do not need any extra surgery to correct them. You need only wait for the effects to fade, and then ask your surgeon to do them differently the next time around.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers are both safe procedures, so as long as you have them performed by a qualified plastic surgeon’s team, they carry little risk. Nonetheless, there are various risk factors you should be aware of. You should not receive either of these procedures if you are below the age of 21, have a weak immune system, or have severe allergic reactions to injection equipment. Likewise, BOTOX® Cosmetic may not be a good idea if you have drooping eyelids, issues with facial muscles, or skin problems that affect the areas you want treated.

NOVA Plastic Surgery is committed to providing safe surgeries and in-depth information to all prospective patients. Thus if you are considering BOTOX® Cosmetic or fillers, we are happy to offer a consultation on whether the procedure is right for you.
