Earlier in the week, we talked about how a facelift can reverse the signs of aging, and we discussed which form of the procedure might be best for reducing wrinkles and sagging skin.
Now were going to discuss facelift recoveryand possible risks. Having all the information can help you make a more informed decision about if and when to schedule your facelift procedure.
Facelift Recovery
The time it takes to recover from a facelift will vary from patient to patient, and will also depend on the type of facelift you undergo. Generally, most patients will be recovered enough to return to normal activity after one to three weeks, and results will be final within one to four months.
When you wake up (facelifts are usually done under general anesthesia), you may feel groggy or have an upset stomach as the medication wears off. Your surgeon can recommend any medications needed to combat nausea or discomfort. The doctor may also prescribe you some antibiotics.
The surgeon may also place a bandage around the surgical site to keep swelling down, which may be replaced with an elastic bandage after about 24 hours. There may be tubes in place at the surgical site to help with fluid drainage.
Most patients will experience some swelling and/or bruising in the first few days after the surgery. Both of these effects will fade. Patients can generally return to work within about two weeks, though this will depend on the specifics of your procedure.
Your surgeon may recommend that you walk around several times a day to help with circulation and drainage. Youll want to avoid bending over to lift heavy objects, and youll want to avoid saunas or steam rooms because they cause your face to flush. Sleeping with several pillows to elevate your head will also help with the swelling. Youll need to do this for about two weeks.
You will also want to wear button-down shirts and avoid vigorous scrubbing of your face or hairline during the recovery period. Blow-drying your hair should be avoided for about two weeks.
Facelift Risks
A facelift is a surgical procedure, and there are therefore some risks involved. Your surgeon will go into more detail about the risks of the facelift procedure you have selected. Infection is one of those risks, as are: nerve damage, hair loss, hematoma, skin discoloration, and changes in skin sensation.
Your surgeon will thoroughly explain all the risks before the procedure. Click here for more information about facelifts.
