Many hair removal techniques are expensive, painful and messy (like waxing), or need to be repeated daily or weekly (like shaving). If you’ve been looking for a better way to remove hair from the face or body, laser hair removal is for you. Very simply, laser hair removal is a procedure that penetrates the hair follicle with light energy to destroy the root without damaging the skin surrounding the follicle. The darker pigment in the root absorb the laser’s energy, killing it and preventing future growth!
A 43-year old woman, whose youngest child had been born 11 years earlier, decided that after a decade of considering getting a “Mommy Makeover” the time was right. She had been working out, eating right, and taking good care of her body but just wasn’t seeing the results she wanted. After spending a lot of time doing research on plastic surgeons and speaking to her friends about their experiences with plastic surgery she came to NOVA Plastic Surgery.
During her consultation, Dr. Nukta explained the surgical options and techniques and determined that the patient would be a great candidate for a breast augmentation, mini abdominoplasty, and liposuction of the flanks and thighs.
This is an in-depth look at the procedures that were performed on the patient and the results that she obtained from her “Mommy Makeover” surgery.
Because the patient did not have any ptosis (drooping of the breasts), she did not require a breast lift with her augmentation. Her breast augmentation options included placing the implants either under the muscle or over the muscle. For the surgeon to place the implant over the muscle, the patient has to have enough soft tissue to cover the implant. Over the muscle placement also requires less recovery time. However, because the patient wanted to increase the size of her breasts from a B cup to a D cup, she and Dr. Nukta decided that placing the implants under the muscle would be the best option.
Abdominoplasty is commonly known as a tummy tuck. Pregnancy takes its toll on the female body, so women who have had children often turn to abdominoplasty to remove excess skin from the abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. A full tummy tuck addresses three components of the abdomen: the muscles, skin, and fatty tissues. During a full tummy tuck, the surgeon will tighten the abdominal muscles, remove excess skin below the belly button, and remove any excess fat with liposuction.
A mini tummy tuck, on the other hand, is less invasive and less dramatic than a full tummy tuck. It involves removing the loosened abdominal tissue in the area between the belly button and the pubic bone. It doesn’t change the location of the belly button and has a much smaller incision.
The patient in this case did not have a lot of abdominal laxity, so she was a good candidate for a mini abdominoplasty.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove stubborn excess fat deposits in various areas of the body. Although the patient had been exercising and eating right, some of her fat deposits were resistant to the diet and exercise. Therefore, Dr. Nukta performed liposuction on her flanks and thighs.
5 months later, our patient looks fabulous. She says that she is happy to have a better sense of self, to have transformed her body, and is excited to wear a bikini on the beach this summer.

Botox is one of the most commonly used cosmetic products (more than 5 million injections in the USA alone in 2011). Botox is given to relax the muscles and diminish the wrinkles in your forehead, and smile lines. Botox starts taking effect in about 3 days, maximum effect is reached in 10-14 days. It lasts anywhere between 3-6 months, depending on the amount injected, the size of the muscles and areas injected. Areas that tend to move more, like around the eyes, recover faster than more stable areas like the top of the forehead.
Below are some important tips to make the recovery as smooth as possible:
- Avoid any activities that increase the pressure in your face in the few hours after the injection, like heavy lifting, bending or straining. This is to minimize the chance of bruising.
- Use the icepacks on the areas injected to minimize bruising for the next couple hours.
- You may notice drops of blood at the puncture sites. You can wipe them with a clean wet sponge.
- You do not have to move your muscles in any certain way.
- Some swelling is normal, but should subside within a couple hours.
- You may wear makeup after your treatment. Always make sure to wear a medical grade sunscreen.

We are thrilled to offer our patients an exciting medical-grade line of sunscreen and skin care products from EltaMD!
Sunscreen is an essential part of everyone’s skin care routine- especially patients who have recently had a cosmetic procedure. The skin of an incision or scar is new, and therefore more fragile and sensitive to the harmful UVA/UVB rays of the sun. Without protective sunscreen, a scar will darken considerably in reaction to sun exposure and will end up darker and more noticeable than the surrounding skin.
Even if you haven’t recently had a cosmetic procedure, you need to vigilantly protect your skin from the sun. Sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, fine lines and wrinkles, and the early degradation of elastin and collagen in your skin (the proteins that keep the skin firm). Guarding your skin from the sun is the first step in maintaining a youthful look.
UV Aero Broad-Spectrum SPF 45 offers UVA/UVB protection and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. The easy-to-use zinc oxide formula sprays on white so you don’t miss any spots, and dries clear. It is oil-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, and great for sensitive skin and children.
UV Sport Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 offers UVA/UVB protection with a 9% zinc oxide formula. It can be used on wet or dry skin (great for swimmers and other outdoor athletes), is safe for children, and is water resistant. This formula is also fragrance- and paraben-free.
UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 has UVA/UVB protection with a 9% zinc oxide formula in a light daily facial moisturizer. It can be used alone or with makeup, and is quickly absorbed by the skin. The product also contains hyaluronic acid to decrease the appearance of fine lines and increase skin smoothness. It is fragrance- and paraben-free.
PM Therapy Facial Moisturizer is an overnight moisturizer that repairs and rejuvenates skin while you sleep. It contains ceramides, which strengthen the moisture barrier of the skin. Antioxidants in the formula improve and even out skin tone while rice protein peptides stimulate cell growth and improve collagen formation, which in turn improves skin elasticity. The skin will look more even, more rejuvenated, and have a decreased appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is safe for all skin types.
Laser Balm is a powerful moisturizer designed to ease recovery after CO2 or Erbium laser treatments, or after dermabrasion. After these procedures, you can experience some dryness or tightness, and EltaMD Laser Balm soothes those affects. It helps to strengthen damaged skin and moisturize the newly exposed skin. It is preservative free and safe for sensitive skin.
We carry a sunscreen option for everyone! Feel free to pick up any of these products at your next visit to our office. If you have any questions, give us a call at (703) 574-2588!
As we age our faces sag, like pretty much everything else in our bodies, however we age differently and some people benefit from surgery more than others. Face and neck lift are not a magic cure for aging and they work best if used correctly on the right patient. Look in the mirror and see if you have the following signs
1- Jowels: The skin of the face is attached to deeper structures through ligaments (the blue circles). These ligaments do not stretch as much as skin does, so as the skin sags behind these tight ligaments jowels are formed (black arrows). These jowels can dramatically improve with mini Face Lift. This is done through a cut hidden in front of and behind the ears.
2- Platysmal bands: as we get older a very thin muscle (platysma) thickens and sags causing 2 bands in the neck (yellow triangles) these can be improved by tying the two parts of the muscle together through a face/neck lift. This is done through a small cut (1 inch) hidden under your chin.
Addressing these 2 signs of aging can restore many years as it improves the contour of your neck and lower face. It gives you back the nice jaw line you once had. If you have any questions and need us help you determine if you are a candidate for a Face Lift, don’t hesitate to call our offices in Ashburn or Reston for your plastic surgery consultation with me (Fadi Nukta, MD)
